The Las Cruces Farmers Market is two different places.

At sunrise it’s dark and cold … in February anyhow. Some of the players come in from the plains with their trailers hitched, full of their wares. Other players show up on foot with their musical instruments strapped on their backs.

When the sun finally pours over Main Street, the game begins.

For visitors, the market is a mix of community and organic simplicity that has made it a part of downtown for more than 40 years.

For the vendors, mixed in with a genuinely friendly atmosphere of a sidewalk sale, there’s an understanding that a small business owner or the budding musician seldom sleeps. Every dollar dropped in a guitar case or bag of kettle corn sold contains a promise of a new day in terms of making a living.
