Samantha Lee, 26, Shiprock, NM, Senior at NMSU, nursing student, graduating in Spring 2017

“I’m grateful to follow in my family’s footsteps. Healthcare is what we all are in. My aunt is a pharmacist in Indianapolis, my dad is in RN in Farmington and my uncle is a nurse in Albuquerque. Becoming a nurse is something I’ve always wanted to do, and as a Navajo, I consider myself very lucky to be here. I’m from Shiprock and many of the people on the reservation do not go to school. I think that is what needs to be flipped on top of its head. NMSU needs to push really hard to bring those people here to build a better future and possibly bring it back to my hometown. I want to see more people like me making the best of the opportunities that are right in from of them. I feel like many just need to be pushed and educated about what they can do down here. I’m about to be graduating and pursuing my dreams because I left my comfort zone. During graduation I’ll be wearing my native dress and afterwards will be going home for a four-day ceremony to bless me in my journey and protect me in the type of work I’m going in. I’m excited for this new journey ahead.”
