Journalism is a profession that involves a person who delivers information to others through different mediums such as print, broadcast, radio, etc. It is an essential profession because it focuses on covering vital information that the public is typically interested in, otherwise known as “newsworthy” stories. Journalism itself is a broad field because it involves many different aspects as well as career options. Now more than ever, there are opportunities in photojournalism due to the decline in newspapers. This is because once society began to retire more traditional news outlets such as newspapers and magazines, people became interested in digital media. Visual images are a major component of online media and help viewers to understand storytelling in an entirely new way.

Nina Leen, photograph from “American Woman’s Dilemma,” LIFE, June 16, 1947 (© LIFE Picture Collection, Meredith Corporation)

This photo is interesting to because the photographer, Nina Leen, encaptured women’s work during the 60’s. It’s amazing to see how much needed women became in society and how their labor impacted the prosperity of the country. There is a light overhead the woman standing in the picture and that’s where the light in the picture is coming from. It reflects the dishes perfectly. This photo wasn’t necessarily about the timing but about getting the angle just right to capture all the domestic items laid across the floor.  While the focus is mainly on the household possessions pictured, it is also on the woman who is ironing. The photo is great because again, the photojournalist was able to highlight the importance of women in the workforce, which hadn’t been recognized prior to the war.

I really appreciate this photo because it is a true testament to the fight the black community has led throughout history. William Campbell is a former Time Magazine photojournalist and a current documentary filmmaker. I like this photo in particular because it shows just one of the ways in which black people were segregated from white people. The light source comes from the fact that it’s daylight outside and the photographer did capture this moment decisively  because the emotion on this man’s face is very impactful. While the focus is on the sign that says “Non White Males”, it is also on the non white male standing adjacent to it. This photo is great because you are able to empathize with a community of people who were mistreated during these times and it makes you question; how the color of someone’s skin could be so important that signs needed to be created in order to separate men?  I would probably still be able to create a photo capturing this injustice because while its not nearly as blatant nowadays, people of color still face racism and inequality during this time.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC – Assignment on vaccines, shot in Pakistan, Bangladesh, DRC, Uganda, Belgium and Italy.

William Daniels is a french, Paris based, photographer whose work revolves around social issues. He has had many National Geographic photos published such as the one above. I like this photo because it shows the impact Covid-19 has had not only in the United States but all over the world. This photo was taken indoors somewhere in Pakistan where resources are limited. The light seems to be coming from the side, perhaps from a window. The moment also looks decisive in the way that Daniels captured the child crying while a concerned grown up is carrying her. This is a great photo because it evokes an emotional appeal that makes viewers want to take a call to action. It also makes viewers understand their privilege in living in a resourceful country that provides free vaccines and encourages them to get vaccinated.
