Hatch Red Chile

Hatch Red Chile

The little village of Hatch, NM is the chile capital of the world. It’s annual chile festival is held every year in the village and attracts more than 30,000 people from all over the United States. Hatch is known worldwide for it’s bountiful chile crop and agricultural community. It is small village with a population of only 1,650 and it possesses an old town quality. This is due to its old 1960’s buildings, the few diners in town, the dirt roads and the railroad tracks that run right through it. At first sight it may seem as though it is merely a pit stop that could exist off the highway. However, the people there are all quite close and they make business from travelers that pass through. The Hatch Chile Market, in the photo above, makes ristras,  an arrangement of drying chili pepper pods, to sell to tourists and to anyone else who wants a touch of the Southwest in their home.
