Gary Starbuck, 49, breaks ice in a stock tank for his beef cattle herd on his farm in Clovis, N.M. During the freezing winter months, breaking ice is a daily task that allows the cattle access to their drinking water. Starbuck leaves his house around 6 a.m. every morning to check his cattle and crops. A third generation farmer, Starbuck lives and works on the land that his family has farmed for over 50 years.

  1. First, don’t post the slideshow on the home page. Make it go to a jump page (as I have done for you…grrr….).
This is a poetic bunch of photos and has a NG quality but a couple of suggestions:
-Shoot in alternative lighting. Daybreak. Sunset. Inside the barn with shafts of light coming through. Not just the same time of day. In other words, spend more time on this.
-Start to photograph other people than Dad. If you are looking a bigger picture -as NG does- then you have to expand the idea to people who have this way of life.
I know you now it. The suggestions that I have given you lately -in person- are pretty much what I’m saying here. Timne to put the idea on paper and go for it.
