A Man of a Different Breed
The interesting person I chose to take photos of is a man named Corey.
Corey is a 22-year-old, BSW (Bachelor of Social Work) major at New Mexico State University. Corey is a junior this year and plans to graduate in 2017. Corey is an interesting person because he isn’t your normal man considered to American Society. He is a homosexual man trying to live a normal life just like everyone else. He feels that being gay shouldn’t be a problem in America and he feels he is just as normal as any other man in the world.
When I was down at the famers market I started taking photos of random people hoping someone would come up to me asking “what I was doing?” Well sure enough Corey approached me and asked me what I was doing. I told him I needed to follow someone around and take photos of them for an assignment. Surprisingly Corey said I could follow him around and take photos of him.
Why I chose Corey is not because he embraced the idea of wanting to be followed around and had photos taken of him, but because he fits the description of an interesting person.
What makes Corey interesting is the fact that he is not your typical man; he is a homosexual man trying to live in a normal heterosexual society.
As I sat down with Corey at one point I asked him what his thoughts were of being a homosexual man trying to live in America today. To my surprise he answered the question and then left me with a couple of questions to think about.
“How is it that American’s are so quick to judge a person by their sexuality before they really get to know them? How fair is it that I have to be labeled as gay or homo because of my preference in men? I think I’m just as normal as you (a heterosexual man).”
With that answer and those questions I realized right then and there that corey is no different than any other guy trying to fit in, in todays society, but I also realized thats what also makes him interesting. He just wants to be known as a man in a judgmental society that has a strict view of what men and women should be.
