LET US START FROM THE TOP
Jaqui Torres works as a student-teacher for an elementary school in Chamberino NM and is a senior in the education program at NMSU. Her passion for education does not go unnoticed when you hear her speak about anything education related. Torres believes that change needs to start from the top. The cliche that a leader should lead by example is a saying that speaks wisdom in the eyes of Torres. “We have the university that our president wants, what needs to change is what the president thinks the university stands for.” Torres believes that NMSU should be for the people and not for the person in charge. When taking the history of NMSU into consideration, her reasoning is rooted in sense. She expressed her thoughts on NMSU’s potential and feels that there are many areas that have room for improvement. “The university needs to be for the people of the community, this in itself, would change the mentality of everything” She said that starting from the top and working down would be a huge step towards positive change. “We are always hearing about budget cuts…budget cuts shouldn’t be the reason for loss of education, no one can take away from the community’s learning space.”
