Photojournalism is the telling of a story with pictures and it distinguish itself from other forms of photography. There are three kinds of photojournalism, sports, features and hard news. ( (North Carolina State University) The photographer I picked was David Burnett and one of my favorite photographs is a portrait of Bob Marley.

A photojournalist has to be able to tell a story with pictures, and capture a moment in time. Technology has also played a role on photojournalism, since it became more mobile. (Colllins) During 1935-1975 magazines and newspapers were the main media source. The golden age of photojournalism took place in 1935-1975. During the Great Depression many photographers started to document the conditions in which farmers lived in. Also WWII was taking place and some of the famous photographers during this time were, Eugene Smith and Robert Capa both belonged to Magnum Photos.(Collins)
Dorothea Lange’s is also a famous photographer during this time but she focused on the great depression.Pledge and Burnett founded the Contact Press Images.Photo Agencies are a business and they hire photographers to report on events occurring around the world.

A photojournalism organization that I would join would be National Press Photographers Association (NPPA). For professional membership it will cost $110 yearly. It is beneficial to join the NPPA because it will help your work get copy right. Other benefits that come from joining the NPPA, it will help to publish your work and more customers interested. It can also open the doors to agencies and who knows maybe even a well-known photographer.

My favorite photographs of Burnett are from his collection “Soul Rebel.” This collection has portraits of Bob Marley. They were taken in 1976 and 1977 in Jamaica. (David Burnett) This portrait of Bob Marley is beautiful because it is in black and white. It does have black, white, and middle grey tones. The lighting helps create a mode and portrays the character.
