Photojournalism, what is it?
What is photojournalism?
I believe in many things, but one of the ones that I am most passionate about is the ability to recognize art. There are many different types of art like music, or painting, dancing, or writing. Just like how all of these things capture feelings of different sorts, so does photojournalism. So what is it?
Photojournalism is the art of being able to capture the truest moments of life.
So just like in any journalism aspect, every part of mass communications has a different job to do. Every form of journalism gives you a unique way to see a story. Even if there are street photographers, or documentary photographers, they all make stories, just in different views.
There is a photojournalist that I really admire and really love her work and the stories that she shows. Stephanie Sinclair is an American photojournalist that is represented by VII photo agency. She works for the magazine National Geographic and is known for bringing up sensitive gender issues and human rights around the world. Her latest project “Too young to Wed”, brings up the issues of young girls in Syria, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, and more; about child marriage and arrangements.
There are many ways that people can become photojournalists. There are organizations such as the NPPA (National Press Photographers Association) that offer student scholarships and seminars to become better photographers.
There are also agencies that represent photojournalists such as:
– Magnum photos
– Echo photo agency
– VII photo agency
Photojournalism has really changed with the start of social media and technology. Every day people can tweet or instagram a photo up to the internet and alert others about what is happening. With this new invention it is easier to take pictures of the things happening around us and has really begun a new age.
There was a Golden Age for journalists, starting the 1920’s , newspapers were starting to put photographs in the papers and soon they believed that photographers needed to be out in the open and capture the daily lives of the people, especially those affected by the great depression. Life magazine became the mayor photographer business and brought some of the best photographers of time. Walker Evans, Dorthea Lange, and Gordon Parks became some of the most admired and inspirational photographers of time. They knew what they were looking for in the photographs and were able to imagine them to make the best picture. The Golden Age ended during the 1970s when many publications ended.
There are still many ways that photographers can publish their work. Everyone has a different point of view of this world that we are living in, and therefore many photos can be made.
