Cardinal rule #1: Never mix B/W with Color in the same presentation. Why? It looks like two different photographers did the work. Not good. Busy!
Besides, in this particular case, there is no reason to do so. B/W is for special projects where the work NEEDS TO BE in B/W: Documentary, or, a body of work that is of a serious nature, etc.
Your very last image is your best. Why? Because the focus “fall off” really makes one LOOK at the runner. That’s what focus is all about. It can help you or kill you. Look at the first ones… where the focus is deeper and the trees and background seem to grow out of the back of their heads.
Control your focus!
Also, consider finding different angles so not everything looks the same. Climb up in a tree. Lay on the ground (and get dirty). Find an unusual angle and make people look. You need some variety here. Give an overall sense of the event.
Your captioning is good… as far as it goes. But there is no “set up.” WHO are they running against? WHERE are they running? WHAT is the significance of this particular run (are they running for first in Division or the cellar?) WHEN was this event? Is there an All American on the squad? Is there someone who over came some hardship and is not doing wonders? Humanize your work by getting details on the participants. Also, shoot the other team. They’re photo-worthy, too.
Well, you get my point..right. There are four of the five of the 5Ws and the H.
