Last Wednesday, Oct. 4th, the NMSU Aggies played against the FIU Panthers, winning 34-17. Diego Pavia, NMSU’s quarterback, prepares for the third quarter of the game, warming up after halftime. Pavia has played two seasons with the Aggies, but previously played for the New Mexico Military Institute. Pavia went to Volcano Vista High School and was born and raised in Albuquerque. This is “Pistol Pete”, one of two people who play NMSU’s famous mascot. On Oct. 4, “Pistol Pete” hyped up the crowd and cheered with the NMSU cheerleading team for the NMSU v FIU football game. The identities of “Pistol Pete” are not widely known nor advertised, but there is an application process for potential candidates; in which one of the requirements is that the mustache must be real.
Kevin Johnson is an NMSU alumnus who graduated in 1981 with a bachelor of arts degree in business administration. Over his career, he has worked for Microsoft, under presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama on the National Telecommunication Advisory Committee, and most recently, he was the CEO of Starbucks. On Wednesday, Oct. 4th, Johnson spoke for a College of Business Executive Speaker Series, and later went to the football game at Aggie Memorial Stadium to be recognized.
The “Wonder Dog” is a fan favorite at NMSU athletic events. Wave the Wonder Dog, previously known as Striking, runs out on the football field to entertain fans. He is only a few years old, but Wave started his position in 2021. Throughout the football game between NMSU vs FIU on Oct. 4th, Wave the Wonder Dog ran out onto Aggie Memorial Field to boost crowd engagement and support.
