To me photojournalism is a form of journalism that uses photography/ images in order to convey/ tell a story. The way photojournalism differs from other types of reportage photography is the amount of time for each. I believe photojournalism relies on quick time one shot events of photography such as during a protest or a situation while documentary photography or other forms of photography require planning and long term thinking and thus, taking longer. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most photojournalists make money by working for newspapers, magazines, or book publishers, making around $41,000 in salary in 2011. . Another way they make money is by freelancing and selling their photographs to organizations/ or local newspapers to use.  Some of these organizations include American Photographic Artists (APA), Professional Photographers of America (PPA), American Society of Media Professionals (ASMP), the American Photography Association and many more. The reason to join such organizations is because it allows photojournalists to grow in their skills and be more involved in the community and art that is storytelling and photography, allowing them to build better portfolios and such.

Photojournalism began to be more popularized and recognized in the 1970’s while the earliest form of photojournalism started in the 1800’s. The golden age of photojournalism was 1930s through the 1950s. Top three photographers of his time included Henri Cartier Bresson, Robert Capa, and David Seymore.

Personally, I believe that National Geographic is an organization that is doing the best form of photojournalism photography.

The photographer I have chosen for this assignment and one I would love to emulate someday is Gueorgui Pinkhassov. He is a photographer, born in Moscow in 1952 and is a member of Magnum Photos. Here are some of his photographs]
