Photojournalism

Journalism is telling stories with photographs. But on top of that, the stories must follow the rules of journalism. They must be true stories and the journalist must try to tell the story in the most fair and balance. A photojournalist can take many forms, but in general you find them at newspapers, magazines, news stations and websites and a growing number are found working at other like radio stations which have expanded their coverage to the internet.

I did a research and my favorite journalist is Margaret Bourke-White one of the world’s first and most famous photojournalists. Bourke-White used photography to document the Great Depression and World War II, creating the photo essay, in which one picture or a couple of pictures are used to tell a story. During the Second World War she was the only woman photographer permitted in war zones by the U.S. Army. Capturing significant moments in the war on film, Bourke-White also snapped memorable portraits of world leaders, such as Churchill, Stalin, and Gandhi.

 

All photojournalists are photographers, they use the same tools like editing etc. A photojournalist is a specialist photographer that uses photography, (instead of words, as a regular journalist would) to tell the news or to complement a newsworthy story.
This could be a single photograph to go with say, a headline on a newspaper, or it could be a photo essay in a magazine like National Geographic. As a photographer, you have the liberty to innovate, create and portray anything in any imaginable way, whatever you have envisioned, like an artist or a writer.

As a photojournalist, you have to tell only the truth. A photographer is an artist who captures beauty. A photojournalist use that art in order to tell a story. National Press Photographers Association (NPPA). The NPPA is the leading voice for the work of journalists today. NPPA is the organization that represent photojournalists. If you join the NPPA you receive an annual subscription to News Photographer magazine – the leading publication of the visual journalism profession. Members receive NPPA workshops and seminars. NPPA members can find a job by joining and connect with other photojournalists. NPPA has different kinds of memberships but the professional membership is $110 dollars. A photo agency is a company that represents and markets photographers and their work. Photo agencies help you find the right photojournalist and see all their albums. The “Golden Age of Photojournalism” was from the 1930s through the 1950s. It was made possible by the development of the commercial 35mm Leica camera in 1925, and the first flash bulbs between 1930’s. Wiiliam P. Gottlieb was one of the top photojournalist from the golden Age of photojournalism.
