“I have the physical, emotional and mental ability to help people in need. I can’t fathom a reason why I wouldn’t.”

Alexa Johnston, 24, was born in New Orleans and eventually arrived in Las Cruces, New Mexico to complete her collegiate studies. She hopes to call Africa home one day.

Johnston is a senior at New Mexico State University pursuing a Bachelors in Interdisciplinary Studies. Alexa will begin her next journey in advocating for struggling communities with her application to the Peace Corps after graduation in December.

Her driving passion in life is to help others. Alexa works part time as a respiratory therapist at a local hospital while maintaining her full-time status as a student at NMSU. Johnston hopes to take her service further than New Mexico after graduation. “I think stigmatized groups are the people that receive the least help,” Johnston said. She hopes to enroll in the Peace Corps to work with populations that have high rates of HIV. “Women and children with positive HIV status are among those that receive the least amount of help,” said Alexa. Johnston will finish her studies at NMSU in a December of 2017 then begin the application processes for the Peace Corps upon the new year.

Alexa is the co-president of the NMSU AgGays and participates in many facets of advocacy for the LGBT+ community in Las Cruces.
